Claire Roberts, a Fitness Instructor from Peterborough will be running the London Marathon on 23rd April to raise money for Deafblind UK. Claire said: “I’ve wanted to do the marathon since I was 20 but never felt ready. Now I feel like my fitness is at it’s peak, so I decided to run for a charity that I was passionate about. My friend works for Deafblind UK so I know just how important the work they do is. I can’t think of a more vital cause.”
Although Claire has run half marathons and taken part in other sporting challenges in the past, this weekend’s London Marathon will be her first time around the 26.2 mile course. “Being a Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer has been such an advantage when it comes to training, my colleagues have been really supportive and have given me advice and tips along the way.” She said.
Claire (43) has already raised over £1,400 for the charity by ploughing her infectious energy into fundraising events and is becoming well known for her three-hour spinathons! She also arranged a ‘Ladies Night’ back in November which raised over £1,000.
Claire’s fundraising efforts will help people like Bill, who’s deteriorating sight and hearing has prevented him from enjoying the social activities he likes to do.
Having come along to a Deafblind UK digital support group, Bill has learned how to use his tablet to watch football and keeps in regular contact with his old friends through web forums and emails where he can enlarge the font to suit his deteriorating sight. Without really realising it, Bill has regained an independence that had begun to slip away from him. “You don’t realise how important these groups are to people like me. I can meet people who understand how I feel, make new friends… the technology support has been great.” Said Bill.
