We’ve had the pleasure of working with and writing about many of our inspirational members. However, few are as awe-inspiring as Mick, a passionate fundraiser and daredevil!
Essex-based Mick began to lose his peripheral vision at the age of 25. He was referred to Moorfields Hospital in London, where he was diagnosed with optic nerve damage. Now, aged 63, he is blind in his right eye, photophobic (light-sensitive), and only has 1.5 metres of central vision in his left eye. This has not stopped Mick from pursuing an active and exciting lifestyle.

Thanks to the support of his lovely guide dog Usher, plus his wife Chris, whom he describes as his “rock”, Mick firmly believes he can achieve his dreams.
“My goal is to support others, enjoy life and avoid obstacles!” says Mick. Clearly, heights are no obstacle for Mick, who rose £1,200 with a tandem sky dive in 2018 for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
We’re also thrilled to say that Mick raised more than £1,000 for Deafblind UK in April. To celebrate his 63rd birthday, the adrenaline junkie tried out a 100mph zipwire!
Can you help?
Adjusting to blindness has not been an easy journey for Mick. He has experienced many challenges, such as not being able to tell when electric cars are coming, to trouble with day-to-day activities such as shopping. He has even received nasty comments about his guide dog.
Mick soldiers on however, and this time, he’s asking for your help. This September, he will be taking part in another death-defying challenge: a wing walk. This adrenaline-pumping exercise lets participants stand up and walk on the wings of an aeroplane mid-flight, with some even moving from one plane to another!
