Matthew Humphreys is running the London Marathon for Deafblind UK

Matthew Humphreys from London is running the London Marathon 2023 for Deafblind UK.

Matthew is running the marathon for Deafblind UK in memory of his father, Mervyn, who sadly passed away in April 2021. Mervyn was born deaf and lost his sight later in life. He was a member of Deafblind UK and received support from us over the years.

“Deafblind UK helped my dad in his life, and I’m running for them so that every penny I raise will help someone like him,” said Matthew. “He had a genuine love for life; even when he went blind, he always wanted to be outside and keep active.”

“It was his spirit that inspired me to run,” Matthew continued. “When I saw the date had landed on the two-year anniversary of my father’s passing, I thought ‘I have to run this, what a fitting tribute to my dad’.”

This is the first time Matthew is running the London Marathon. Since taking up running a year ago he’s run two half marathons and loves running around the canals of East London.

Matthew is also an artist and has made artwork which explores his fathers deafblindness. His film ‘The Lost Reels’ is a short film poem made with Mervyn about him losing his sight.  The film has been shown internationally, and won awards. If you would like to see examples of Matthew’s work you can find out more on his website.
