Firewalker shares why he is crossing the coals for Deafblind UK

A firewalk professional wears protective gear as he feeds the firewalk fire and a crowd looks on. Bright orange flames lick up across the foreground.

“Helping others doesn’t always require something extraordinary, sometimes just a little bravery, confidence and courage to step forward and do something.”

Firewalker shares why he is crossing the coals for Deafblind UK Deafblind UKWhen Daniel Barham from Romford, Essex, signed up to the firewalk he joined dozens of fellow fundraisers choosing to brave the daring dash across the coals to support those affected by dual sensory loss this March.

We caught up with him to hear how he’s feeling ahead of the bucket list challenge and why he facing the flames to support the work of Deafblind UK.

So Daniel, how did you hear about the Firewalk?

“The Firewalk post caught my eye on Facebook. It immediately stood out to me, it’s not something you see every day!”

What made you sign up to Firewalk?

“I love a challenge, especially when it’s for a good cause. I’ve taken part in quite a few fundraising events before, and I’m always willing to push myself if it helps raise more money and awareness. A Firewalk definitely felt like something that would take me outside my comfort zone in the best possible way.”

Why do you want to support Deafblind UK?

“I was aware of Deafblind UK as a charity, but I hadn’t previously seen the fundraising events you run. I do have people in my life who are deaf or blind, so I understand some of the challenges that can come with that. When I saw the Firewalk and looked more into the work you do, it felt like a really meaningful cause to actively get behind. When I was a child, my own family needed help. People raised funds for us, and I even took part in an event that was organised to support my family when my dad was very ill. I’ve never forgotten the kindness and generosity shown to us during that time. It taught me from a young age that helping others doesn’t always require something extraordinary, sometimes just a little bravery, confidence and courage to step forward and do something. Being able to give back now and support others who need help feels incredibly important to me.”

How do you hope your fundraising will help?

“I hope the money raised helps provide practical support, connection and independence for people living with sight and hearing loss. If my fundraising can make even a small difference to someone’s life, that makes it completely worthwhile. I never aim to just reach the minimum fundraising target, I always try to raise as much as I possibly can, because every extra pound can make a real difference.”

How do you feel about the upcoming Firewalk, and how do you think you’ll feel on the day?

“I’m definitely nervous, but excited! I think on the day I’ll probably feel nervous right up until I take that first step, but I know the adrenaline and atmosphere will carry me through. I’m excited to add walking on fire to my list of fundraising challenges and life experiences. While raising money for charity is always the priority, I really embrace the challenges I can overcome at the same time, it helps make each fundraiser memorable and encourages more people to get involved and donate.”
