Accessible TV and streaming services

Deafblind UK Open Hand magazine - Winter 2023 disney

Online streaming services have become increasingly popular in recent years, but just how accessible are they for people with sight and hearing loss?

Here’s an overview of some of our favourites…

Netflix

The streaming platform offers subtitles and closed captions which can be customised to make them clearer. You can change the size, font, shadow and background colour of subtitles, which are available on most of their titles. There is also a range of audio-described media available in multiple languages. Although audio description is not available on all titles, Netflix does have a variety to pick from and most of their Netflix originals are audio-described. Netflix is also compatible with common screen readers, voice-controlled remotes and assistive listening devices

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon is making a huge effort with accessibility and now has over 200,000 titles with subtitles. Other titles have alternative tracks and audio descriptions. However, it claims that the range of supported features will depend on the device you are using.

Disney+

The varied streaming platform is making headway in its quest to be inclusive and enjoyable for everyone. Many of their titles now have captions and audio descriptions. They have also published some keyboard shortcuts to help you navigate and watch titles on DisneyPlus.com

Other ways to watch…

While streaming services are taking a step in the right direction, there are also in-home devices which can help when watching TV. Radio aids can be helpful to reduce background noise when listening over a distance as they send sound directly to your hearing aid. This is usually done wirelessly through Bluetooth. We suggest the CM-BT2 Bluetooth Neckloop and the Roger MyLink. It can also be handy to use a smart TV or streaming stick, which are relatively inexpensive. These usually have accessibility modes, with great features like screen readers and voice controls.
