If your child is affected by deafblindness, or if you are a deafblind parent, we can give you and your family specialist support at each stage of your child’s development. We also support schools, colleges, universities and employers to make sure children and young people who are affected by deafblindness have the best possible start in life.
Your family can benefit from:
- A support group for deafblind parents, giving you advice and guidance from pregnancy to your child’s 26th birthday
- Support groups for parents of deafblind children, sharing ideas, information and moral support
- A virtual club for young deafblind people where they can make friends, get advice and share ideas and useful tips in a safe space
- Personalised deafblind awareness training for families, to help everyone understand the challenges and opportunities raised by growing up with sight and hearing loss
- Support for young people to access work, including building their confidence and skills and to develop their employment pathways
- An online drop-in Tech Support Surgery to help you and your family make the most of your tech
- Open Hand magazine – packed full of articles written specifically for people who are deafblind
You can also access our wide range of practical and emotional support services, like emotional support and discounted holidays. Click here to find out more.
Schools, colleges and universities can benefit from:
- Free resources, including our ‘Lesson in a Box’ to help teach students about deafblindness, and ‘Classroom quick wins’ to help schools make their spaces as accessible as possible
- Deafblind awareness training to help you best support your students
- A personalised online ‘Classroom technology showcase’ where you can check out what tech is on the market to help a deafblind child. We can explain the features, benefits, pricing and suppliers (although we do not endorse any particular products or suppliers).
- College/University Buddy – we can work with you to set up peer support from existing students to help any deafblind students settle in. Buddies and staff will have access to our deafblind awareness training to help them support the new student.
