The new course is accepting applications to commence studies in March 2023 and is based on the belief that everyone living with deafblindness has the right to be supported by people with the knowledge and skills to provide a high-quality service.

The Certificate in Professional Studies (Deafblind Studies) was designed and developed by some of the most experienced practitioners and academics in the field of deafblindness. Dr Peter Simcock, whom we welcomed as a Deafblind Ambassador earlier this year, is the Course Lead. Dr Simcock also teaches on BSc and MSc Social Work courses and is the current Chair of the Deafblind International Acquired Deafblindness Network (ADBN). Find out more about his work, areas of expertise and publications on the Birmingham City University Website.

The course also includes teaching materials created by those with lived experiences of deafblindness, including some materials provided by Deafblind UK.

The course aims to meet the requirements relating to the care and support of deafblind people under the Care Act 2014 (England) and the Social Services and Well-Being (Wales) Act 2014 (Wales).

Who is the course for?

The course is for prospective students with a current personal or practice-based experience of deafblindness, who would like to gain an academic and professional qualification in this field.
